Jill Griggs
Membership & Fun-Raising Secretary

I was born in March 1943 and lived in Barnet, Hertfordshire, and London . I left school in 1954 and with my mum went out to join my dad who was working in Ghana . We returned I started work in Boots until I was married to Alan in 1962. We be moved Cambridge and it was there that our daughter Kay was born in 1965. In 1968 I was pregnant with our son Paul when we moved to Norwich . We stayed there until 1984 when we decided to buy a guesthouse. This was something I had wanted to do since a child. Unfortunately, in 1986 on the day of our daughter's wedding, I had a stroke. I took me some time to recover from but I still managed to run the guesthouse. In 1988 we upgraded to a hotel and it was here that Alan had his heart attack. Because of our health we decided to retire. In 1989 we moved to Pakefield, Lowestoft . In 2000 I had a second stroke but, again, I recovered and now I am very involved with HeartCare
I joined HeartCare committee when it was founded in 1989. In those early years I was involved in fund-raising and then took on the role of Membership Secretary. I still am the Fund-raising Secretary as well as being theMembership Secretary. The Fund-raising sub-committee meets once a month from March to September. It has 10 memberss plus HeartCare's secretary who contacts local stores for dates when we can have our collections. Our busiest time is during the summer months and most of our week ends are taken up with HeartCare collections.
We also have the Lowestoft Information Day in July where we have three tables full of Heart and Stroke information, we sell our HeartCare Healthy Lifestyle cookery books and HeartCare badges. We have an ambulance on site and often have the resuscitation Annie to help others learn more about CPR. A fairly new event for us is the Lowestoft Carnival, held in August and we get a great deal of publicity from this.
I am HeartCare's Membership Secretary and all Application Forms come to me. All new members are added to our database. Membership has to be re-newed every September in order to keep the datbase up-to-date. We do not want to send the magazine to those who are no longer with us.
