Neville Sanderson
Editor of HeartCare News

I was born in the Hillsborough district of Sheffield, South Yorkshire in 1931. I served my time as a toolmaker/machine tool fitter and worked in two or three of the large steel works that Sheffield was famous for in those days. I was working in a large rolling mill and forge just before we moved to Lowestoft.

I met Margaret just after VJ day (1945) and we have been together since 1946. The only time we have been parted was during my National Service in the RAF and the times when one of us has been in hospital. Both our parents would not let us marry until we were 21 - sounds old fashioned now doesn't it? We married in February 1952, four days after my 21 st birthday.

During my National Service my parents had moved to Gorleston and we bought our first house there shortly after we married. We move back to Sheffield in 1955 but preferred the East Anglian way of life and move to our present address in 1962.

I became a schoolteacher in 1975 and taught in Gorleston until my heart attack in January1989. HeartCare was formed later that year when I became a founder member.

We had a Newsletter in those early days that consisted a maybe two A4 sheets and was sent out to members but not on a regular basis. I was asked in March 1995 if I would have a go at taking it on and it has developed to the full magazine that you now receive each month. Later that year we needed a Treasurer, which I took on. I computerised our accounts to make it easier but, as HeartCare News was rapidly developing, it became obvious that I could not do both so Brian became Treasurer and I became Vice-Chairman in 1999,

As HeartCare grew so the number of HeartCare News needed each month increased to the point where we could no longer print them ourselves. I approached the Prison Service (I do have legitimate contacts there!) and Norwich Prison print about 800 for us each month. The inmates there do a great job for us and I, personally, send them a big thank you for what they do for us. The “Friends of HeartCare” section help in covering our costs. If any reading this want to know more please contact me either directly or through the “Forum”.
