All about Fromage Frais

You can use it instead of cream in desserts and pasta sauces and it is a good topping for fruit and muesli snacks.

It looks and tastes like yoghurt, but did you know that fromage frais is really a cheese?

The name is French and it means “fresh cheese”.

That is why you will find it with the cheese in the supermarket chill cabinet

.It is made by adding an acid producing culture to warm, pasteurised, skimmed milk, which causes the milk to curdle.

The curd is separated from the whey; poured into tubs and chilled.

English fromage frais is on sale too and looks and tastes just as good.

For a low calorie alternative to mayonnaise in dressings and sandwiches, look for virtually fat-free fromage frais - one tablespoon of mayonnaise has 115 calories; fromage frais contains just 15 calories.

You can buy fruit flavoured fromage frais which is high in protein and rich in calcium, so it makes a healthy dessert. In a very low-fat fromage frais, there is only 0.2 g of fat in every 100g.

Flavour fromage frais with snipped chives, curry paste or chilli sauce for a low calorie dressing.
